ZV / Idiot

Idiot was a mid-1970s American rock band steeped in irony, parody, and self-amusement. From 1974 to 1977, the band evolved from a glam rock high school band to a proto-punk powerhouse of weirdness.

The band consisted of Tad Williams (singer and lyricist), Tom Sanders (bass player), Andrew Jackson [then known as Andrew Finkle] (rhythm guitarist, vocalist and songwriter), Rick Cuevas (lead guitarist), and Paul Almeter (drummer). In the later years, Pat Coyne replaced Paul as the drummer, and the band went through a couple of synthesizer players (Ivan and John).

White boy funk, heavy metal satire, prog-rock fantasy, acoustic folk parody, glitter rock queens, punk posers — these were just some of the many faces and phases of Idiot Starting with a suburban junior high school dance ("the inhuman jive bozo idiot dance") and ending with organized chaos at San Francisco's legendary Mabuhay Gardens during the peak period of the Polynesian supper club's punk notoriety, the 3-year span of Idiot's reign of humor/terror was full of adventure and misadventure, fun and madness. Tad and Andy wrote hundreds of original songs together, some of which were played by the band, others were played for fun at parties (entertaining themselves mostly), and some were immediately forgotten. The band name came from Shakespeare's Macbeth: Life is a tale told by an idiot; full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The Idiot reunion & “Savage Roger”

On October 11, 1997, the six original members of Idiot gathered together with a bunch of old friends assorted freaks at The Woman's Club in Palo Alto to celebrate the breakup of their rock band 20 years ago in 1977. It started out as a grand joke, and no one knew what would happen, but they did it anyway. Idiot performed the old songs, and wrote and performed some new ones too. Everyone remembered why they broke up the band, but had fun bewildering all their friends in the process.

Since 2007, four original members of Idiot are playing music together as Savage Roger. The band’s name is inspired by the Bonzo Dog Band song “Trouser Press.”

Who is Android Christ?

Idiot's first performance, in December 1974, was a wild teenage party at Josh's house in Palo Alto: one of those old 2-story "professorville" homes. We learned the Queen song “Keep Yourself Alive” and some obligatory rock-n-roll party songs, like Wild Thing. Tad sang lead, Andy was the rhythm guitarist and second singer, Rick played lead guitar, Tom was on bass, and Paul hit the drums. Before the band strapped on their instruments, Josh and Tad hovered over Andy in the upstairs bedroom creating the cutely demonic rock fantasy creature that evolved into Android Christ. With Andy as the raw material, they applied make-up, frizzed-out his long hair, and completed the look with Josh's sister's platform shoes.
